STUDIO105

(May – August 2009)

Four people, one internship, three months, four videos.

DESCRIPTION:

Studio105 was the name adopted by myself and three other MDM students for the purposes of our three-month summer internship at school. My fellow interns were Felwa Abukhodair, Karin Schmidlin and Matthew Schroeter. Contracted to create a series of promotional videos for different brands, we independently negotiated the details of the terms and deliverables with the client (a wholesale company) and were subsequently responsible for conceptualizing and creating every single element for each video from scratch. We tried to find openly licenced music whenever possible. The videos were designed to be showcased in a kiosk-type environment where they would loop perpetually. They can be seen below in their entirety.

BRAND ONE: RAINWORKS

BRAND TWO: THERMOFLO

BRAND THREE: MONDI

BRAND FOUR: MYBRAND

MY ROLE AND LESSONS LEARNED

In the Studio105 Project, my duties were primarily those of Technical Director / Lead Compositor. Once concept and style had been established, I created the framework for each video in After Effects – in anticipation of the art assets in development by the rest of the team – and then animated all the graphics and transitions. Each video had distinct technical and aesthetic requirements, and in the process of finding solutions for the various complications I encountered, I quickly acquired a profound appreciation for Adobe’s flagship compositing application. The project was undeniably daunting at the outset and demanding in its execution. A couple of the videos required us to film or photograph products (graciously trucked over by our client) on a turntable or being demonstrated by an actor. Limited resources and time meant rapid prototyping and improvisation would be the rule. Working together in each phase of the production, it was an absolutely invaluable and hugely educational experience for everyone involved.
